Fern Empowerment Foundation(FEF) a non-governmental organization focused on welfare of children in education, has commenced the construction of disability friendly entrances for Ashifla Methodist Primary school classrooms located at Ga-South District in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.

This project follows the organization’s discovery of lack of mobility aids and the existence of physical barriers in the school which poses difficulty for pupils living with disability.

According to the Persons With Disability Act, 2006, Act 715, necessary facilities and
equipment that will enable persons with disability to fully benefit from the
schools or institutions must be provided by government. But the reality remains that facilities of some schools and institutions remains disability unfriendly till today.

Co-founder of Fern Empowerment Foundation, Ruth Yamoah explained the project will in the meantime assist pupils with disability access their classrooms without stress.

“As an organisation with focus of children education, we discovered upon our visit to this community that children living with disability face challenges when it comes to participating in school activities mainly because of this issue and others. Assisting them with these will enhance inclusiveness and promote a supportive and comfortable space for all students to learn in”, she said.

“There are more in stock for pupils living with disability as we are working toward providing more support so that these pupils are not disadvantaged as compared to their mates”, Miss Yamoah added.

The project is expected to be completed in two weeks.

Meanwhile, the organization also called on all who wish to support their project to contact them.
